A family is heartbroken after a 21-year-old man drowned at Lincoln Woods State Park Tuesday night.

DEM identified the victim as Victor Deleon Mendez. On Wednesday, his aunt spoke with NBC 10. Brenda Veliz said Victor loved to swim.

“I can’t believe it, he was so young, he had a life,” said Veliz. “I was just shocked I didn’t have words.”

Officials pulled Mendez’s body from Sunset Cove on Tuesday after a two-hour long search that officials said was made difficult due to murky water.

Veliz said Mendez first came to the United States in 2018 for education.

She said his father lives in Rhode Island, but his mother and older brother both live back in Guatemala.

“He’s just a young gentleman,” said Veliz. “He had dreams to come to this country to support his family in Guatemala.”

Veliz launched a GoFundMe page to help raise funds to bring Mendez’s body back to Guatemala.

“Anything will help, a dollar, 50 cents, it doesn’t matter the amount, we really need the help, not only for the expenses here, but also the expenses in Guatemala,” said Veliz.
