June 22, 1950

 

A recent census revealed Sweet Home’s rise in population made it the highest percentage increase of any municipality in the state. The city’s population in 1940 was 1,090. It was 3,620 in 1950, a 232% increase.

 

The Frontier Days horse show committee decided to hold a “buckaroo” breakfast downtown on the morning of the horse show in August. Committeemen hope to procure some type of wild game as a feature of the menu.

 

June 19, 1975

 

The city offered Robert Hofheins $26,400 for approximately 6.6 acres of the old Oregon Plywood property. The city estimated the amount of property adjoining Sankey Park west of Ames Creek to be approximately $4,000 per acre. The property would include control of the dam head, which was previously used to fill a mill pond. Hofheins will have the land appraised before responding to the offer.

 

June 21, 2000

 

Milt Moran was selected to be District 55 School Board Chairman. He said the district is already headed in the right direction with improved communication and involving parents more in the schools. He’s also seen improvements in test scores. His main goal now is to pass a bond levy to complete a number of building and reconstruction projects.

 

Students heading to Japan for a two-week stay at the high school’s sister school got more of an adventure than they bargained for before they even left the state. The group was aboard Delta Flight 51 when it lost one of its three engines. The MD 11 plane was forced to land at PDX after dumping thousands of gallons of fuel over southwest Washington.
