Alabama has fifth highest rate of impaired driving deaths, study says

Online safety site SafeWise ranks Alabama fifth among the states for highest rates of impaired driving deaths.

Alabama has the fifth-highest rate in the United States of impaired driving deaths, according to a new study.

To make the roads safer, an online safety site is offering ridesharing credits over the Labor Day weekend to applicants.

Alabama was fifth among the states, with Montana leading the pack, followed by South Carolina, North Dakota, and New Mexico. Alabama had 6.6 fatalities per 100,000.

New York State, with 19 times the population of Montana, was the state with the fewest impaired driving fatalities, with 1.65 per 100,000.

The study also found a connection between the use of ride-sharing services and and a decrease in DUIs and impaired driving crashes.

SafeWise is offering free Lyft rides to Alabama residents over the Labor Day weekend, to encourage residents not to drive impaired. The first 100 people to sign up with receive a $10 Lyft credit. The codes will be delivered on Friday. It's part of a similar offer the company is making in the top five states for impaired driving deaths.
